Our trapshooting league was formed in 1968 and has been in continuous operation every year since. It is kind of unique that some of the shooters who first started in the league as Junior shooters have kept with it and are still members of our league but now qualify for Senior status. It is truly a sport for all ages.
We shoot American style Trap on most Thursdays from May till August. Our members belong to eight different clubs located in both Erie and Crawford Counties in the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania.
Our eight member teams combine to have about 300 shooters competing in our League. Our season starts with a Pre-Season Shoot normally held on the first Sunday in May with the regular season starting the Thursday of that week. It will continue for 14 weeks of shooting and is divided into a First and Second half. Teams shoot on a home and away basis where one of the teams will host a visiting team in the first half and then their roles will reverse in the second half. That way each team has seven home shoots and seven away shoots each season. The Champions of the First Half, determined by team Won/Loss records, and a shoot-off to break ties if needed, will meet the Second Half Champion to determine the Season Championship. Following the regular season, we also hold a Post-Season shoot. Just like the Pre-Season shoot, all eight teams will compete at one of the member clubs home grounds. The location of both the Pre and Post Season shoot is set on an eight year rotating schedule. These Pre and Post shoots often have in excess of a hundred shooters competing.
Our League teams are Albion Area Sportsmen Club, the Bay City Gun Club, Black Ash Sportsman Club, Lake Edinboro Sportsmen League, Erie County Sportsmen League, Gem City Outdoorsmen Club, North East Sportsmen Club, Saegertown Area Sportsmen Club.
The shooters compete not only for Team Championship awards but also for individual awards. Shooters are classified into groups based on the averages they establish over the course of a season. There are also Special Categories for Older shooters (at least 62 years of age) and younger shooters (Age 18 and under) and Ladies. There is no special category for wheelchair bound shooters and our league does have shooters with mobility impairments and these shooters are competing on an equal basis with all of the other shooters. The only requirement we have is that all shooters safely handle their firearms. Several of our league members have won both state and national championship awards.
Trap shooting has competitors using shotguns, most often 12 Gauge but any shotgun can be used, to try to hit a clay pigeon flying away from them. The target is launched from a machine, called a trap, located 16 yards in front of the shooting line. The five shooters that make up a squad are located in an arc facing the trap house. The targets will fly approximately 50 yards away from the shooters before coming to the ground. Their flight path goes upward and then gradually curves downward back to earth. These flying discs are about 4.25 inches in diameter and about 0.75 inches in height. So it can be quite a challenge to hit his small, fast moving target.
Now that you know a little bit about our sport and our members and their clubs, why don't you come out and join us. Contact information for a club near you is available by using the Location link on the home page. We sure would like to have you join us.
